December 18: Prayer of Confession

“Confession is the spiritual discipline that allows us to enter into the grace and mercy of God in such a way that we experience forgiveness and healing for the sins and sorrows of the past.  Both forgiveness and healing are involved in confession. Forgiveness positions us in a right relationship toward God— objective righteousness, to use a theological term. Healing frees us from the domination of our present by our past — subjective righteousness, to use another term from theology."   (Richard J. Foster)

Don’t we all want to be right with God and right with each other?  Forgiveness and healing is what confession is all about.  Living with guilt is something we all do, how freeing it would be to be guilt free.  You can be guilt free before God today, it doesn’t really matter how big the sin is, 1 John 1:9 says that God can “…forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”   Let’s do some confession today :)

Contemplate on this passage, and lets take the weight of sin off our shoulders in prayer

  • Psalms 32:1-5:  “Blessed is the one     whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 2 Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.  3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away     through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.[b] 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sins”

Ask God for:  God is there any sin I’m covering up?  Reveal is to me.  Let’s pray with David prayer in Psalms 139: 23, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
We all have sins that we aware of, they are on our mind, they weigh us down, we feel guilt, depression, shame, sadness, like a failure, and hopeless. Release those sins to God right now in confession. Maybe we have covered up some sin, they are so far in the past, maybe the guilt doesn’t affect you anymore.  Ask God to refresh you memory that your heart will feel uncomfortable about your unconfessed Sin.  Lastly confessing our sins to one another, is there someone we need to confess our wrongs to and seeking forgiveness.  Pray that God will reveal and give you strength to go to your brother or sister in Christ.  (see James 5:16) Pray for our church that the Holy Spirit will convict our members of their sins, and unresolved conflicts that need to be confessed.
Thank God for:  Jesus I just want to thank you for being faithful to your word, you are truly merciful God that can be trusted with my sins.  I thank you for your Grace, and for taking the weight of my sins off my shoulders.  Thank God right now in your own words.  Share with God how forgiveness makes you feel.
