December 26: Prayer for Revival

Psalm 85:6 ~ revive us again | Psalms, Read bible, Daily bible reading

One of Ellen White's strongest appeals for revival and reformation was published in the Review and Herald, March 22, 1887, under the title "The Church's Great Need.  Ellen White says, "A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs. To seek this should be our first work.” Selected Messages, book 1, p. 121

She later shares some of the elements to receive gift of the Spirit,  "Our heavenly Father is more willing to give His Holy Spirit to them that ask Him than are earthly parents to give good gifts to their children. But it is our work, by confession, humiliation, repentance, and earnest prayer, to fulfill the conditions upon which God has promised to grant us His blessing. A revival need be expected only in answer to prayer." Selected Messages, book 1, p. 121.

A true revival will transform the way we live for Jesus.  Today we’re going to pray for revival that God will take us from a church with all it’s ritualistic, and formalities to a church where each member embodies the spirit of Christ mission to save humanity by sharing and living the gospel.  I love what Pastor Mark Finely says in his Article: Reviving your church in 1988, “There is a price for revival—not be cause God is unwilling to give it to us freely, but because we are unprepared to receive it. The price of revival is the same today as it has been in all ages: repentance! earnest prayer! confession of known sin! a re-emphasis on Bible study! time in the presence of our Lord! There are no shortcuts. There are no easy solutions. The price of revival is intimate, living, daily fellowship with Jesus. Spending time in His presence, we shall rejoice to do His will.”  (Ministry, February, 1988)

Thank God:  God we thank you for your Spirit and your Word that has the power to take dry dead bones and breathe life into them (See Ezekiel 37: 1-6).  We thank you for Jesus who wants to have intimate, living, daily fellowship with us.  We thank you for the power of prayer that can change us and bring true godliness in our lives.

Ask God:  We ask that the elements of revival will be apart of our lives, and the lives our church members.  We ask that confession, humiliation, repentance, and earnest prayer, bible study will be on the forefront of our lives.  Jesus we come to you thirsty, you promised in your word “38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38).  Revive us this morning with that living water.

Prayerfully read these passages regarding the call for revival:

  • Isaiah 1:16-17, Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong.17 Learn to do right; seek justice.  Defend the oppressed.[a]. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

  • Joel 2:12, 13, “Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”13 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

  • 2 Chronicles 7:14, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
